This is the last post in our short series on life in the Spirit, and it's really the point of the whole thing. We've walked through being born of the Spirit, being filled, being formed, and being led. Step back and you see they're not five separate experiences to collect. They're one life. That's what the word "baptism" was pointing at all along: to be immersed, plunged in, fully saturated. Spirit Baptism is a life lived immersed in and by the Spirit.
Not a moment, a whole life
When I was younger, I thought the baptism in the Spirit was a single, second event, something that either happened to you at a dramatic altar or didn't. I've come to believe it's far bigger than that. It's the promise of the Father, given by the Son, and it covers the entire Christian life:
- Born of the Spirit at the start.
- Filled with the Spirit, again and again.
- Formed by the Spirit into the likeness of Jesus.
- Led by the Spirit, step by step.
Put those together over a lifetime and you don't have a technique. You have a person soaked through with God, ordinary and unfinished, but truly alive.
Why this matters for a church
This is why we call Arise a Spirit-filled church, and why we say it without hype or embarrassment. We are not claiming to have arrived, and we are not chasing a spectacle. We're trying to be a people who depend on the Holy Spirit for everything: to be born again, to be filled again, to be changed, to be led, to be sent. Take the Spirit away and we're just religious activity. With him, we're a people coming awake to God.
An honest word if this feels far off
Maybe all of this sounds wonderful and completely out of reach. Maybe your own experience of the Spirit feels thin, or confusing, or nonexistent. You're in good company, and you don't have to fix that before you come. A Spirit-filled life doesn't start with you getting it right. It starts with God, and he tends to begin right where a person actually is.
Come and be immersed
So here's the whole invitation, in one line: come and be immersed. Be born of the Spirit if you never have. Keep being filled. Let him form you and lead you. Do it with other ordinary people who are learning the same thing, in the unhurried rhythm of following Jesus together.
