We've said the Spirit gives us birth, keeps filling us, and forms us into the likeness of Jesus. This week: he leads us. The Christian life was never meant to be lived by willpower and a rulebook. It's meant to be lived in step with a Person.
A guide, not a formula
On the night before he died, Jesus made his followers a promise about the Spirit: "when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth" (John 16:13). Guide is a relational word. It doesn't mean God hands you a map and walks off. It means he goes with you, showing you the next step as you need it.
That's good news for anyone who has ever felt stuck at a decision, wanting to do the right thing but unsure what it is. You are not on your own. The Spirit who lives in you is willing to lead.
Led, and therefore his
Paul draws a striking line between being led by the Spirit and belonging to God: "those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God" (Romans 8:14). Being led isn't an advanced feature for spiritual professionals. It's a family trait. If you belong to God, being led by his Spirit is your birthright, not something you have to earn.
Keeping in step
My favorite picture of it is Galatians 5:25: "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." Keeping in step is an everyday, moment-by-moment thing, like walking beside someone whose pace you're matching. Most of being Spirit-led isn't dramatic guidance about big life decisions. It's the small, daily yes: forgive that person, make that call, tell the truth, stop here, go there. Step by step, we learn his pace.
How we listen
Being led by the Spirit is not weird or reckless. It grows in the same soil as everything else: an open Bible, prayer, and honest community. The Spirit never leads against Scripture, and he loves to confirm his leading through the people around you. So we read, we pray, we sit quietly long enough to listen, and we check what we sense with brothers and sisters who know us. Spirit-led can be sane, sensitive, sensible, and Scriptural.
So, follow his lead
If you've been white-knuckling your way through life, trying to figure it all out alone, there's a better way. Ask the Spirit to lead you, then take the next small step he shows you. This is the "Follow" in Follow, Become, Do, and it's meant to be a walk, not a sprint you do by yourself.
